Crochet Toy Play Balls: Scrap Yarn Stashbuster

Hi friends, readers and crocheters!!

Let me start by saying THANK YOU for popping over.  I hope your year is off to a great start!!

I don’t know about you, but at the start of each year after cleaning up from the Holidays, I feel this intense need to PURGE!!! I want to clean and organize and start the year fresh!!

What this usually means in my office, is gathering all those random scrap balls of yarn that I have left lying around after knitting scarves and beanies for months.

Through all my many years of crocheting, this remains one of my favorite ways to use my scrap yarn!!

CROCHET BALLS WITH ME THIS YEAR!!  This WHOLE ENTIRE YEAR!!

UPDATE OCTOBER:

I am FINISHED!!!  267 Balls is what I ended up with and what a year it has been!! And best of all – I have almost no scrap yarn left!!

You will find more information and inspiration and THE PATTERNS ON THIS ORIGINAL POST.

For each month this year, I will be crocheting a COLOR-INSPIRATION set of balls and sharing them here.  I am hoping to have a whole ball pit soon!!

January:

The colors that I think of for January are minty blues and greens, purples and white and silver!

Don’t forget those snowballs!! You can make the most fun “snowballs” from a white furry yarn.

Some of the new chunky chenille type yarns are perfect for these soft playballs.

Add in those white metallics for a fun pop of sparkle like icicles on trees.  I love winter!!

February:

February is the month of LOVE!!

What other colors would you use?  I also thought about all the colors in that Conversation Heart candy.

February is full of reds and pinks!!

It is the color of kisses and sweets!!

ORIGINAL POST WITH PATTERNS.

In one of my earlier posts, I shared this fun VALENTINES Edition of these balls with the pattern for the Kiss and Heart.

March:

Oh, March!!!

How could it not be full of GREEN!! Green for St. Patrick’s Day and green for all the new growth after winter.  I think of tulips and daffodils and new leaves on trees! Of course, there has to be a pop of pink too for the new flowers popping out and just a bit of blue for the fresh blue skies!!

April:

With April comes Easter and flowers and rain and everything pink, purple, yellow and turquoise!!  You can also think about baby bunnies and chicks and add white and maybe even some bunny ears.

Think Easter Egg Hunting!!!  You can even crochet little round circles and sew them onto your balls to make polkadot balls.

May:

In May, I am usually out in my garden!! A lot!! When I think of May, I think of all the flowers blooming and grass growing and we get Dragonflies back!!  I love watching the dragonflies dance around the yard and all their glorious colors are something to see!!  This set was inspired by all those colors outdoors: Grass, Dandelions, Azaleas, Blue Skies, Rain, and more.  May also has Mother’s Day and Memorial Day so I added in some reds and pinks for mom and her roses and also some red, white and blue for Memorial Day.  This is a fun colorful set!! May is one of my favorite months of the year!!

June:

Set 1:

For the month of June, I was torn between doing all the colors for Father’s Day and also for summer!! I ended up doing 2 sets.  For the Father’s Day set I pulled out all my “manly” colors including some camouflage!!! With blues and greens and browns and grays this is the perfect way to start the month.  Dad approves!!

June Set 2:

June is the start of Summer and when I think of summer, I think of brightly colored swimming pools and floats and popsicles!!  This set is surely bright and fun and I hope your summer is the same!!  Pull out all those tropical, bright, and neon colors and get crocheting!!

July:

I mean – July has to be all the red, white and blue and just a hint of gold.  In the past I also did a few balls with a black sparkly yarn and a bright strand to be like fireworks in the sky at night, but I didn’t have any more of that, but you just might.

July 2: This fun set is Beach inspired for Summer in blues and yellows.

When you think of the beach don’t you see it in all the colors of blue and yellow with some “sand” thrown in?  This sweet set is just right and super refreshing!!

August:

Hello August!! I am not sure about where you are, but for me it has been too hot to breathe outside!! Therefore, the August balls are finished very early this month, but I am trying to finish all the months early for Holiday Shopping.  Stay tuned all the way through the series and I will show you how I plan to market all of this goodness up at the end!!  If you are just joining in, you may have to save your balls for next seasons’ craft shows and fairs.

In August it is BACK TO SCHOOL for most places and when I think of back to school, I see it in all the primary colors: red, blue, green, yellow, orange and purple and I have used them all!!

Stay tuned…we are just a few months away from the end!!

Coming up next in September – this turn to Fall, Football and maybe hunting?  September’s balls became November’s ball so please see that update below.

So, to be honest I did not go back to do another set for September.  After doing the one for September and moving it to November and having already finished a few extra sets along the way I decided I was good 🙂

October:

October is quite possibly my FAVORITE SET!! These colors just turned out so magnificent!!  Full of orange, black, purple, green and some pink.  It is so bright and alive!!

November:

September Update: After I got the set of balls above finished for September, I realized that these are all the colors that I would have chosen for November balls – so, I am moving this set to November because these balls are so many colors in a THANKSGIVING FEAST!! I have also added some camouflage (for the hunters).  I am going to do some random colors for September, but if you are following along with me and have any sports teams that resume games in the Fall, that may be a great option for you.  Stay tuned…

December:

I mean, what other colors could I have used for December?  Red, greens and white finishes up this year with a bit of sparkly yarn thrown in.

I have a new way for you to support my FREE PATTERNS!! I know many or most of you love supporting us makers – the truth is that is takes a long time to create a pattern and then write it and then edit it and get it proofed and tested – and then publish it – then you have to link it everywhere – it’s a lot of work, but us makers do what we do to share our love with you. And, if you have followed my blog, you may know that I do not run ads on my blog, so all my support comes from PDF purchases. Some of you don’t need to purchase the PDF of my patterns but still want to say a quick Thank you – so, you can now support my blog and my work.
