Crochet Water Bottle Carrier

I have a new way for you to support my FREE PATTERNS!!  I know many or most of you love supporting us makers – the truth is that is takes a long time to create a pattern and then write it and then edit it and get it proofed and tested – and then publish it – then you have to link it everywhere – its a lot of work, but us makers do what we do to share our love with you.  And, if you have followed my blog you may know that I do not run ads on my blog so all my support comes from PDF purchases. Some of you don’t need to purchase the PDF of my patterns, but still want to say a quick Thank you – so, you can now support my blog and my work.

This is a quick and easy pattern!  I modified and adapted this pattern over the last two years -or so- to be a perfect fit for most water bottles.  This is one of my most pinned pins – from before I started my blog when I was just trying to drive traffic to my Etsy shop – and then a few things happened to make me want to put up this pattern:

First, with summer starting my sales picked up again for this item on Etsy.  I offer this as a custom order item and prefer to use cake yarns.  Here is that LISTING.

Second, I have about 3 leftover Caron Big Cakes and need to use them up because I am committed to working down my huge stash this year.

Third, my pin started heating up again on Pinterest so I wanted to offer my pattern and

Last, I want to practice and get better at doing video tutorials so that I can do more of them.  This is my biggest video to date!  I managed to get it done by using iMovie.  I think I did okay, but please let me know any constructive feedback so I can do better next time.  I am still new to the blogging world and WAY new to YouTube so it is a learning experience.

This pattern is fairly easy and once you do it a few times you won’t even need the pattern – I could have written it down, but I thought some of the written parts might be confusing so I did the video instead.

I may edit this post later with the written pattern if I get enough feedback that it is wanted.

I have updated the bottom of this post with the written pattern since it was requested by more than a few people.  If you have any trouble please see the video.

You will need any 4-ply worsted weight yarn for this project and your I/5.5mm crochet hook.  My video is just over 20 minutes long and the first time you work up this pattern you probably need an hour to watch and work.

So, here you go.  Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions.  As always:

This pattern is intended for personal use only. This pattern -and all my patterns- are offered for free or a small fee to help support my family so please do not redistribute, sell, copy or use them in any way not in accordance with fairness.

You may sell products made from this pattern, but please give me credit as the designer. Please do not use my photos as your own work, but you may use my photos to reference back to my blog, Etsy, Pinterest, IG or FB, but please link back to me.

If you find any problems with this pattern please let me know and if you have any problems with any of it feel free to message me and ask for support.

Written Pattern:

(I have added a little modification at the end of this post for really large/tall bottles)

With your I hook and yarn we are going to start with a basic circle.

*I always work in a spiral, but if you normally join each round and chain up that is up to you*

Ch 2 (you can also use a magic ring if that is your preferred method of starting a circle)

Round 1: 6sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1sc in next sc, 2sc in next sc** repeat around (18)

Round 4: *1sc in next two sc, 2sc in next sc** repeat around (24)

Round 5: *1sc in next three sc, 2sc in next sc** repeat around (30)

Round 6: Back Loop Only (BLO) single crochet in each stitch around. Join to the first single crochet with a slip stitch. (30)

Round 7: ***chain up 2 or 3: if you like to chain up 2 and then do a double crochet into the same space do that, but if you like to chain up 3 and count that as your double crochet that is fine too. I chain up 3 and count that as my first double crochet and then crochet a double crochet around in each stitch. Slip stitch to the top of the chain 3 when you get back around to the first double crochet (30)

Round 8: repeat round 7

Round 9: [mesh work] Chain 4 and skip 2. *the space that your chain 4 starts in is the 1st stitch. Skip the 2nd and 3rd stitch and slip stitch into the 4th stitch. (Chain 4. Skip 2. Slip stitch into the next stitch) *repeat around until you get to the end of the round and have 2 stitches left that you skip – slip stitch into the first chain 4 space and then continue around with chain 4’s slip stitching into each chain 4 space.

You continue around in this manner making your “mesh” open crochet. For most water bottles I stop after 5 rounds. *the chain 4’s make little almost horizontal “bars” and I stop when there are 5 bars. The video explains this better if you are confused.

When you are done with the mesh work slip stitch into the last chain 4 space and chain up 2 or3. Go back up to the start of Round 7 and repeat rounds 7 and 8. For the first round of double crochet you will be putting 3 in each chain 4 space (30) and then for the next round each of the double crochets go into the double crochet from the row below. (30)

Now, repeat the mesh work above one more time.

Next, you will repeat Round 7 and 8 one more time BUT I USUALLY DO half double crochet for round 8 instead of double crochet because I think it makes for a neater and nicer last row. – again, the first round of double crochet goes into the chain 4 spaces.  3 double crochet per space for 30 dc.

Once you are done with the last round of either half double or double crochet chain up 175. Count over 15 spaces so that the top of the bottle carrier will have the same number of stitches on each side and slip stitch across the top of the carrier to make the strap BEING CAREFUL NOT TO TWIST THE CHAIN. (the video shows how I do this without worrying about twisting my chain) Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first chain and then double crochet in each chain of the strap until you get to the last chain. Half double crochet in the last chain and slip stitch to the top of the bottle carrier.

You can choose to finish off here, but I usually slip stitch around the top of the bottle carrier and secure the straps do the bottle with slip stitches on each side of where the strap starts. Again, the video show this really well, but basically, I tack down the strap better to the bottle carrier top with 3 slip stitches – one on each side of the chain and in the middle of the chain.

Finish off and weave in your end.

I adapted my pattern for these huge water bottles. These are those giant Life Wtr bottles. I used the same pattern- kind of – as above, but I added one more round of increase on the bottom after round 5. So, from 30 stitches you will do another increase to 36 stitches. Then work up in the same manner. You can see in some I did 2 rows of dc in the middle, but I also did 3 rows in some. Just fit to your bottle. <3

    1. Hi there. It is back loop only so work in just the back upper loop. This lets your work folk upward easier. Does that help?

  1. The strap was way too long for me. Any suggestions on how to measure for the correct length based on my height?

    1. Sure. Just measure the length you need and chain almost to that length. When you crochet into the chains your work will stretch out a bit so make a bit shorter. Also, if you’ve already completed a strap and it’s too long you can make a nice accordion fold and stitch or tie into a cute knot.

    1. Honestly for a wine bottle you may want to adjust this for more than just size. I would probably not put this type carrying strap on a wine bottle. I imagine it would just be too heavy – I’d probably adjust the top completely to make two smaller hand holds. But, as far as sizing the bottom – yes, just increase until you get it big enough and then work straight up. For a wine bottle it might also be better to use a bulky weight yarn and larger hook.

  2. Thank you so much for posting this pattern! I just whipped up a water bottle carrier for my daughter this morning and it is so cute! Your directions were very easy to follow, especially the way you did the video so that I could pause and follow along.

    1. You are so welcome!! I’m glad it helped. I’m not the best videographer but I’m so glad it helped you.

  3. Love this pattern! Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve been using an H hook and looser tension and have had great results. I’ve tried the I hook and it makes my work look a bit too messy. 🙂
