Blue Velvet: Crochet Whale Baby Blanket Free Pattern

First, this is going to be a super quick post.  I know like the rest of you crafters and crocheters, you are busy busy busy like I am, but I wanted to jump on and share this because I love it so much!!

This is a baby gift for a friend and it so squishy and amazing!!!  I’ve just finished the blanket and paired it with this Whale Toy that I did earlier this year.

I love to combine yarns for a different texture and fun look – so, I pulled all of this goodness out of my stash closet:

The top 4 include 3 skeins of Red Heart Fiesta which isn’t available anymore, but it is very similar to Red Heart Aran Fleck or I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby.  The darker blue is I love this Yarn from Hobby Lobby in Blueberry Buckle.

This post does contain affiliate links.  I will get a small percentage from any purchase made through my page here, but your price remains the same.  I appreciate any purchase made through my page as I can continue to offer free patterns here on my blog.

The bottom two cakes are Caron Cakes Latte Cake in Velvet Teal (hence what I named this pattern) – and honestly, if you have not tried Latte Cakes it is amazing!!   Here is another baby gift I did using Latte Cakes: Bunnies in the Woods

The latte cakes is so soft and squishy on it’s own, but when you pair it with another strand of yarn, it is just scrumptious and perfect for baby!!

I mean, look at this texture:

I used my size 8mm hook for this blanket and held two strands of yarn at the same time.  These are the hooks I have for my large sizes:

I held a strand of the Latte Cake with a strand of each color.  The Latte Cakes are 530 yds and I used every bit of these two cakes.  I had some of each one of the other skeins leftover and that is what I made the little octopus rattle with.  I’ll post a link below for the free pattern for that.  I just estimated about half of the cake and then changed color on the regular yarn.  I chained 100 to start my blanket and did hdc for all the rows – easy and simple.  My blanket ended up being 42″ x 48″ so if you want to make it more square you might want to start with a chain of about 85 or so.  After the rows were done and I was out of the Latte Cake, I had enough of two of the other yarns left to hold them together and do a hdc border with 2hdc ch 1 2hdc in each corner. The self striping cake with the solid flecked yarn just made such beautiful color changes.

More details:

The WHALE TOY is from my A-Z Crochet Toys with Me Series that I just finished not too long ago.

The Octopus rattle toy was made USING THIS PATTERN, but you can also find MORE INFO ON THIS POST

The Whale Labels are purchased from ALL THIS WOOD on Etsy from which I have no affiliation.  They are just marvelous!

And that is it!!  A real quick one today, but I’ll be back next week for another free pattern – I think A is for Alligator is up next.
