Crochet No-Sew, No-Stuffing, Reversible Octopus Toy

Hi Readers and Crocheters!!

Who doesn’t love an octopus toy???

Here is a quick modification to one of my most popular patterns and blog posts and great for Stash Busting!!

You won’t even need any stuffing!

All you need to do is make two “heads” and hold them wrong sides together and keep going.  Of course, it is a little more involved than that, but first check out this OCTOPUS TOY PATTERN here on my blog and you’ll understand a bit more.

Okay, now really quick for a few modifications to make up these cuties.

I used my size H/5mm hook and Red Heart Super Sizer and Big Twist Value Yarns.  There is not any stuffing, so I wasn’t worried about the larger hook size.

I made two heads (a bit different than the original pattern and more on that below) and then crocheted them together with my size J/6mm hook that I also used for the legs double stranded so that both colors were used.

You can find the original PDF with this addition in my ETSY SHOP HERE.

The PDF is beginner friendly with LOTS of photos to help.

Okay, now here are more spelled out details:

If you need more details, please hop over to my original pattern where more is spelled out for the top of the head and legs etc.

My PAID FOR PDF also contain pictures if you need further help.

Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12) (Starting in the first sc make 2 sc in that stitch and in each stitch around. (12) *Still work over the starting tail. After getting done with all 12 sc for that round, pull the starting tail to cinch up the opening.  You can now trim that tail or weave it in or just leave it if it will be on the inside of your work.)

Round 3: *sc, 2 sc** repeat around (18)

Round 4: *sc 2, 2 sc** repeat around (24)

Round 5: *sc 3, 2sc** repeat around (30) *follow pattern above for top loops if you want those and the eyes.

Rounds 6-15: sc in each stitch around (30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)

Round 16: *sc 3, inv dec* repeat around (24) *this round is super important because each leg takes up 3 spaces and 3×8 is 24.

Make two head pieces. Pull your working loop out a bit while you work on the next head.

Hold the head pieces together with the wrong sides facing each other and the right sides “out.”

Pull the working loop from the piece inside to the outside and then grab your larger hook and use both strands to sc the pieces together all the way around.  (24) Make sure to grab both stitches and not to miss the inside since this reversible shape will need to look good on both sides. Slip stitch in the next stitch after you join them together.

Once you have crocheted the two pieces around with 24sc you will follow the pattern for the legs in the original pattern.  You will go through both loops on the head though since these don’t get closed on the bottom.  I chained 18 for my examples and put 3hdc on each chain starting in the 3rd chain from the hook.

After slip stitching in the first stitch, slip stitch in the second stitch and chain your chain, make your leg and then slip stitch 3 on the body and chain again….make leg…slip stitch 3 and chain again….

The leg pattern is a (slip stitch – chain for leg – slip stitch) 8

The original pattern has this spelled out more.  The original pattern also uses sc instead of slip stitch, but this does not really change the overall shape.  You can do sc instead of slip stitch if you prefer.

What color will you be making first?
