One Groovy Upcycled Couch: Scrap Yarn Project

I.am.in.love!! This turned out just like what I envisioned for my home office.

It all started with this old, dirty wooden couch that I thrifted. It had no cushions and looked like it had maybe been someone’s front porch accessory. Ha! It really did need some work

Being that one of my other hobbies is refinishing and upcycling old furniture, I had to have this piece.

It got a good cleaning. Three times. Then a light sanding and then I painted it a light gray color. I wanted to keep it neutral and light because when I painted it, I was still unsure of how and what I was going to do with the bottom.

I did know that it was going to need a bottom, so I ordered this foam – it’s thick and squishy and perfect for it – we cut it to fit and then I kept it like this for months…just looking at it…deciding….

I knew I wanted to crochet a cover for it, but I wasn’t clear on how I wanted it to go. I felt that I did want to have the top stripes running like they are. I also knew that this foam wasn’t just going to easily slide into a pillow case type cover. I also wanted the front stripes to run opposite for a contrast. And this is what I came up with.

I just am thrilled with this! I only used scrap yarns – held two strands together throughout- and my J size hook and half double crochet. I kept one of the colors a gray and then added different colors through the piece. If you make a cover like this, after you turn to work the rows going down, make sure to work into the back loop only (unless you’re working from the other side and then the front loop) on the first row to help that front row part fold down.

It fits on the cushion like a slip cover rather than completely enclosing it.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my new office couch. Remember to look at someone’s trash as a new possible treasure for yourself.

XOXO

Kristi
