You, Me and the ABCs : Crochet ABC Toys : R is for Robot

If you are a crocheter and have a baby or toddler, play room or nursery, and love organization and helping your child learn – this post is for you!  I am posting new patterns for each letter many times per week so keep checking back.

Want a fun way to use your scraps? Want to make a lot of little projects/toys that are great for little ones? Want to custom a special piece for a wee one? – and then end with one big finale? This project is for you! (And you can skip the big finale if it’s not for you and still have all the little toys and ABCs.)

I have compiled the letters of this event in a convenient downloadable PDF if you prefer to print them out and have them all in one place.  And my printable paid patterns contain a lot more photo tutorials to help you if you need.

You can find the toys for the letters A-F HERE ON MY ETSY.

And in Part 2, you can find the letters G-M also on my Etsy at this link right HERE

and now – the Letters N-S are available in a PDF with two extra additions right HERE in my Etsy Shop.  In this PDF you also get a copy of my large Robot.  The large Robot is 26″ tall and won’t be part of this blog event since he’s just too large for this project, but he IS available in the PDF bundle with my other toys.

But, if you want just a copy of all 3 of the Robot’s you can also find a separate PDF for just the 3 robots HERE in my Etsy Shop.

And MOST ALL of my PAID patterns contain way more photos and tutorials than what I can add to my blog post. I try to keep my fees very low.

This project was in my head as I was designing all of these letters and I’m so excited to get this started! Won’t you join me? Here is the latest new pattern to go with the others already linked.  If you prefer to shop on Ravelry for your patterns I also have the entire alphabet PDF over there.

I have been asked if I can make these available in my Ravelry as downloads – and the simple answer is yes – but, in Ravelry it isn’t as easy as adding a big PDF or several small ones like on Etsy- I have to load each and every toy individually and then link them all together as an ebook.  I do plan on doing this – but, as you can imagine, creating a separate listing for each toy from A-Z with more than one per letter will probably take an entire day of work. So, after I get done writing all of these up and having one final PDF I will upload this project to Ravelry as an ebook.

You can begin by deciding what colors you want to use for your letters – I’ll be using them all! – and make up the alphabet  or save this post and wait for the end and make it all at once.

I’m gonna give you some options at the end to make the final part right for you/your space.  Here are some of the previous toys so make sure to check out THE ORIGINAL POST to link hop to them all.

Here are some of the latest patterns that are all free here on my blog. I will be keeping THIS ORIGINAL POST updated with all the links for all of the toys.

So, won’t you join me?

Robots:

I have written 2 options for this part of the series. The two smaller robots are about 14/16″ – I also wrote a large Robot Doll pattern that is about 26″.  He is too large and won’t be blogged for this series, but ALL 3 Robots are in the PDFs in my Etsy shop – you can find the large pattern in my N-S PDF TOYS and all 3 Robots in THIS PDF.

Materials: any #4 worsted weight yarn like I Love This Yarn, Red Heart Super Saver or Caron One Pound.  I will note exactly which ones for each pattern. Assorted odds and ends like buttons, beads, and rubber bands were used in these, but think outside the box and use any fun, colorful things you can think of.  Just keep in mind the age of the person you are making it for.  These would be cute even for grownups embellished in a whole different way. Think about metal grommets, nuts and washers, beads etc.  Add crinkle paper or rattles.  Yo could also modify the belly patch to be more of a frame and add a photo inside.  So many ideas!!

The hooks that I used for this project are G/4mm and H/5mm.  I will note which for each section.

This, like all the alphabet patterns, are made in the continuous spiral with no join or chain up.

Here are some things that might help you get these made:

Robot #1:

The yarn for this Robot is Caron One Pound in Grass Green, RHSS in Light Blue, a scrap ball in cream, gray, purple and black and white mixed.  I’ve used buttons for eyes and pony beads and buttons on the electronics board.  I’ve used my size G hook for all of this pattern. This example worked up to be about 15” for me.

Chain 2.  Single crochet 6 in the second chain from the hook and work over your starting tail.

Starting in the first sc make 2 sc in that stitch and in each stitch around. (12) *Still work over the starting tail. After getting done with all 12 sc for that round, pull the starting tail to cinch up the opening.  You can now trim that tail or weave it in or just leave it if it will be on the inside of your work. You want to move your stitch marker to the last stitch of each round so you know when you get to the end.

Round 3: (1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (18)

Round 4: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (24)

Round 5: (1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (30)

Round 6: (1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (36)

Rounds 7-11: sc in each stitch around. (36)

Round 12: (1 sc in next 4 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (30)

Rounds 13-14: sc in each stitch around. (30)

Round 15: (1 sc in next 3 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (24)

Round 16: sc in each stitch around. (24)

*This is where I advise a break to do the eyes/eye patches if you are using safety eyes. For the safety eyes, they go between rounds 10-11 with 6 holes in between.  BUT, while you do need to go ahead and secure safety eyes inside the head, I suggest making the eye patch, inserting the eye through the patch and then into the head where mentioned, but leave the eye patch UNSEWN until you get the head stuffed. I used buttons on this example, so waited until the end to do the eyes and face.  If you are not using safety eyes hop down and continue with the body.

The eye patches are crocheted like this:

Eye patches: These are simple half circles You work half circles in the same method as a full amigurumi circle, but instead of joining and continuing in the round, you chain one and turn and work back the other direction – so, they are worked in rows, but with the same stitch count as a circle.  In these half circles, I am doing 5, 10, and 15.

Leave a long tail at the start for sewing. Chain 2.  Make 5 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook.  Chain 1 and turn.

Make 2 sc in each stitch across (10) Chain 1 and turn

Sc, 2sc across the row (15) – – Chain 1 and half-turn

Sc along the rough edge back to your beginning tail- leave a second tail for sewing.

Add some stuffing to the head – Resume the head/body:

Round 17: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (18) *

Rounds 18-19: sc in each stitch around (18)

Round 20: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (24)

Round 21: (1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (30)

Round 22: (1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (36)

Round 23: sc in each stitch around (36) – continue to stuff the head and body as you go

Round 24: (1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (42)

Round 25-34: sc in each stitch around (42)

Round 35: BLO (1 sc in next 5 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (36)

Round 36: (1 sc in next 4 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (30)

Round 37: (1 sc in next 3 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (24)

Round 38: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (18)

Round 39: (1 sc in next stitch, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (12)

Make sure the opening is stuffed well and sew closed.  Weave in the end.

Make eye patches if you have not already and sew them down. I use one tail to sew around the eye patch and then the other to tie the sewing tail to and then weave the two into the head.  **If you are using buttons, you want to use the tails from the eye patch to also pull through the button. Weave in the ends when finished.  The buttons that I have used are Sew-Ology rhinestones buttons purchased from JoAnn’s.

Embroider the mouth.  I used a long enough length to embroider around the eyes with the same length of yarn as the mouth.

Antenna/Ears: Ch 2 Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (18)

Round 4: BLO sc around (18)

Rounds 5-7: sc in each stitch around (18) – leave tail for sewing.

Sew even with the eyes about 3 stitches visible between them.

Top antenna: Repeat rounds 1-3 for ear antenna above and then work:

Rounds 4-7: sc in each stitch around (18)

Round 7: (1 sc in next stitch, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (12)

Stuff lightly

Round 8: (dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (6)

Work a few rows even with no increase until it reaches the length you want for the top antenna.  I did 3 more rows.

Tummy electronics board:  Chain 9.  Sc 8 across the row and chain 1 and turn now and for every row.  Work in rows until you have a square that fits on tummy like you like.  I made 9 rows on my example.  Finish off with a tail to sew to the tummy.  Embellish with pony beads, buttons or even just yarn if for a young child. This would be a great place to add some crinkle paper for toys.

I’ve added squeaker inserts in the legs.

LEGS: Repeat rounds 1-4 from antenna/ears above.  (6, 12, 18, blo 18) and then work straight until they are the length you like.  For my example I did 15 more rows.  Leave a length to sew under the body.  Stuff firm.  Leave your tail long enough that after you sew under the body you can drag the yarn down through the leg and wrap around the middle to make two segments. Tie and weave in the end.  *you can make much longer legs and make more than one segment when you finish.

ARMS: Each “ball” or segment of the arm is made like this:

Ch 2 Round 1: 6 sc in second chain from hook (6)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc** repeat around (18)

Rounds 4-5: sc in each stitch around (18)

Round 6: (1 sc in next stitch, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (12)

Stuff lightly

Round 7: (dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (6)

Round 8: sc in each stitch around (6)

Repeat rounds 2-8 until you have the number of segments that you want for your arms.  Finish with a long tail and sew the top closed.  I added 3 pony beads to the top and then tied onto the side body a few rows down from the ear antenna.

Robot #2

The main yarn for this Robot is Big Twist in Royal Blue and Caron One Pound in Grass Green.  I’ve also used some scrap balls of yarn in gold and grey.  In addition, I’ve used safety eyes, buttons, pony beads and some hair ties.  I’ve used my size G hook for all of this pattern.  This example worked up to be about 16” for me.

If you want to add some colorful hair ties around the neck like I have, it may be helpful to pull your working yarn through the stack of them so that after you work the neck rounds you can pull them up – like you would do if you threaded beads onto your yarn first.  If not, it is fine – you can lightly stuff the head and then pull them over the head and then stuff more.

BODY:

Working in the CONTINUOUS Round:

*I do not join and chain, but continue to work in the next stitch. Use a stitch marker for this so you don’t lose your place.

Rounds 5-10: sc in each stitch around (24)

Round 11: (1 sc in the next 4 stitches, inv dec) (20)

Rounds 12-13: sc in each stitch around (20)

Round 14: (sc in the next 8, inv dec) (18)

Rounds 15-16: sc in each stitch around (18)

*stop here and do whatever eyes you want to do and start stuffing the head.  I chose to use safety eyes so inserted them here.

Round 17: (1 sc in next stitch, inv dec over the next two stitches) repeat around (12)

Rounds 18-19: sc in each stitch around (12)

Round 20: (1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (15)

Rounds 21-22: sc in each stitch around (15)

Round 23: (1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (18)

Round 24: (1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in the next stitch) repeat around (24)

Pull the rubber bands up or down if you are using them – and then make sure it is all stuffed really well.

Rounds 25-39: sc in each stitch around (24)

Round 40: FLO sc in each stitch around.  Finish off and weave in the end.

ARMS: very simple.  Leave a tail for tying.  Chain 16 and work sc down the chain for 15sc.  Chain 1 and turn and work two more rows and leave a second tail.  Tie onto the side of the body with the two tails and weave the tails inside.  *if you’d rather make tube/traditional amigurumi style arms feel free to do so.

LEGS: Repeat the first two rounds as you did the body for 6 and then 12sc.  Round 3: BLO sc in each stitch around (12) – Work as many more rows as you’d like for length.  I did 14 more rows in the BLO in my example BUT DO NOT finish off the second leg.  You will be joining the two legs together after you make the second one.

After you make the second leg, hold the two legs side by side and crochet 6 sc around the second leg and then put the next sc in the first leg you made to join them and crochet 11 more sc around the first leg and then put the next sc in the second leg and make 5 more sc around the second leg. Now the two legs are joined.  Do two more rounds around of sc in each stitch.  You should now have this:

Sew the legs to the body in the unworked loop of the body from Round 40.

Antenna/Ears: (in my example these are the gray ones)

Ch 2 Round 1: 5 sc in second chain from hook (5)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (10)

Round 3: BLO sc around (10)

Rounds 4-5: sc in each stitch around (10) – leave tail for sewing.

Sew even with the eyes about 3 stitches visible between them.

Top antenna: (in my example I have used gold)

Start your circle as you did for the body and legs for round 1 and 2: 6 and then 12 sc.  Work 1 sc in each sc around for the length that you want.  I used the same color yarn to tie off this piece into sections after I lightly stuffed it and sewed it on.

Tummy electronics board:  Chain 9.  Sc 8 across the row and chain 1 and turn now and for every row.  Work in rows until you have a square that fits on tummy like you like.  Finish off with a tail to sew to the tummy.  Embellish with pony beads, buttons or even just yarn if this is for a young child.

And voila! You are done.  I hope you have enjoyed this fun project and came up with some fun things to sew on.  I’d love to catch up with you and see all of your Robots over @theburgundybasket on IG.

Pin this post and come back for all of the A-Z toys!   You can find a link to the original post below to start from the beginning!!

I realized after I started this project that I would never be able to update every new post with every new link – once I got down to the end of the alphabet, I would have to update about 20 post with all the links to all the new patters – So, I will be keeping THIS ORIGINAL POST updated with all the new links for all of the new toys.  <3

In addition to the alphabet patterns, below you will find a list of toys that will be linked right here starting now. *these are not set in stone and I may decide to switch them as I work if I am inspired in a different direction. So, pin or save this post and come back and follow along with me or subscribe to my blog and get email updates when I make a new post.

Will you be joining in the fun? I’d love for you to make all of this with me, but if not pick a few and make it with me.

I’d love to see all your work or catch up with your progress so connect with me over on IG @theburgundybasket
